Witty Gritty is seeking an Engagement Editor to help manage the weekly operations of their new, online publication (launching Summer 2017). You will be responsible for sourcing and writing stories as well as attending events for coverage, connecting with community and neighborhood stakeholders, and managing content across social media platforms. The Engagement Editor will work with the Editorial Advisor, News Editor, and other freelance writers as well as interface with members of the Witty Gritty team.


Specific responsibilities include:

  • Posting daily and monitoring activity on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter accounts
     

  • Writing three to five short content items per week (200-400 words)

    • This can include: event preview/recap, short profile, short Q&A, business profile, intersection profile, zoning case explainer
       

  • Writing one feature per month (at least three sources; 800-1200 words)
     

  • Additional retainers will be added on a per-program basis


ABOUT THE PUBLICATION: From the team that brought you Flying Kite -- and seven years worth of Greater Philadelphia-centric stories -- comes a new name, brand, and website (launching Summer 2017) along with a deeper exploration of the region via its neighborhoods. Through images, words, video and sound, we want to show you what the city really looks like and spotlight voices that aren’t always heard.


We will accomplish this through a multimedia approach. With a robust and active social media presence -- and an emphasis on images and video -- every connected, engaged Philadelphian should be following on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. We want to invest in these platforms, partnering with local photographers to showcase their work on our accounts and hiring writers to report live from meetings and events. Our new website will bring all those streams together and feature interactive mapping tools and longer narrative journalism. Other potential opportunities include podcasts, community access television and content-sharing partnerships with other media outlets.


The spirit of this new project was born in our “On the Ground” initiative, a program that sent the Flying Kite team to eight neighborhoods over the course of three years. We established temporary media hubs, shared hyper-local news, and built relationships with both community






 

organizations and small businesses. Our new publication will allow us to spend more time all over the city, but with more flexibility in how we amplify this work. How about a weekend in Olney or a happy hour in Camden? We plan to place an increased emphasis on events and programming, building connections within neighborhoods and introducing curious Philadelphians to new parts of our diverse, vibrant metro area.  


Our new publication will be a lean operation, built and operated within the existing infrastructure of Witty Gritty, a civic-minded Philadelphia-based company that showcases, engages, and connects their clients through marketing, events, and engagement. Funding would be generated through grants, underwriting agreements and event production.

FINE & IMPORTANT PRINT: This position requires an estimated 20 hours/week of your time as a 1099 employee. We ask that you have availability during business hours and on some weeknights and weekends (for possible event coverage). There is room for growth in this position and with Witty Gritty. Payment is commensurate with experience.
