Old City is a neighborhood in Central Philadelphia. The neighborhood in centered around the historic district of the city and bounded by the Delaware River, Spring Garden Street, 4th Street, and Walnut Street. Founded by William Penn in 1681 as a settlement for himself and his fellow Quakers, this neighborhood is the oldest part of Philadelphia and contains attractions dating back to the time before the American Revolution. Old City also is the place where our nation was founded. This is the area of Philadelphia where the colonists first adopted the Declaration of Independence and where the Constitution was written. Many structures from that time still exist, including the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, and Elfreth’s Alley, the nation’s oldest continuously occupied residential street. Old City Philadelphia was the nation’s capital from 1790 through 1800. During the 19th century, this neighborhood became a center for industry, dotted with many factories that have lately been turned into housing. Today, Old City is a thriving, vibrant neighborhood, particularly popular with young adults. There is a wide array of entertainment venues, including restaurants, bars, and clubs in addition to the numerous historical attractions.
